The unique opportunity that Nissen is igniting is an innovative program created by the Faculty of Social Work called the Indigenous Scholars Academy (ISA). The ISA will partner with Indigenous youth who have “aged out” of foster care, providing them with culturally based supports, educational opportunities, and the personal and economic support needed to successfully pursue a social work degree.
“I’m thrilled that Gary Nissen has chosen to support this program, which I believe will address a number of important issues for the social work profession, for the university and for Albertans,” says Dr. Jackie Sieppert, dean of the Faculty of Social Work. “It’s really a first for Canada.”
The ISA will be led by Sieppert, along with Indigenous Elders and community leaders.

AIM-HI Student Scholarship Stipend
will provide funding to support First Nations, Métis and Inuit health sciences research graduate students to actively engage in their individual development and mentorship needs. The AIM-HI Network Graduate Student Mentorship Stipend amount is $6,000 and a total of 8 stipends will be awarded in 2019-2020

International Indigenous Mentorship Workshop

The CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH), in collaboration with the Health Research Council (HRC) of New Zealand and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia will be hosting the International Indigenous Mentorship Workshop in New Zealand. The dates of the 3-day workshop are still to be finalized. You can expect the workshop to take place between December 1-12, 2019.
If you are an undergraduate, master’s, doctoral student, postdoctoral fellow, or early career investigator and you are interested in attending the International Indigenous Mentorship Workshop, please fill out the Expression of Interest (EOI) Form (see below link).
This opportunity seeks applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) or provide evidence of having meaningful and culturally safe involvement with Indigenous Peoples in order to:
- Prioritize First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples and communities in leading their research agendas;
- Promote cultural safety of and appropriate engagements by researchers working with Indigenous Peoples in meaningful ways;
- Add value to the research through the use of Indigenous culturally relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and Indigenous culturally appropriate research protocols, including Indigenous methodologies; and
- Promote equity and development of trainees, researchers and knowledge users who are of Indigenous ancestry.
We also encourage you to submit an application to the ICS Travel Awards (launch TBD) in order to receive funding for travel and accommodations.

"The Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University is pleased to invite applications for three one-year Pre-Doctoral Fellowships for Indigenous Students.
The Fellowships are open to Indigenous students enrolled in a PhD program and working on doctoral research in the creative arts, humanities, social sciences or natural and physical sciences at an accredited university other than Queen’s University. Candidates must have completed all doctoral degree requirements except the final doctoral project (e.g. dissertation).
They will be expected to compete their doctoral project during their tenure as a Fellow to receive their degree from their home institution."

Repsol Indigenous Award
"Available to Alberta First Nations and Métis who are enrolled in or have applied to a technical school, college or university in any program. Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc.’s Indigenous award program is designed to acknowledge the efforts of post-secondary students in the Indigenous community from Treaty 6, 7, 8 communities or from the a Métis Settlement community in Alberta.
The award may go toward the cost of tuition, books or supplies to a maximum of $2,000 per academic year. Selection is based on proximity of the applicant’s residence to Repsol Oil & Gas Canada Inc. operations, the applicant’s career aspirations and demonstrated community involvement."
Who can apply:
* Indigenous students working toward a Registered Nurse (RN) degree, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Bursary criteria:
* Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time nursing program either at Mount Royal University or the University of Calgary.
* Applicants must include a one-page essay on why they want a career in nursing and why they are applying for the bursary.
* Applicants must include one letter of support.
